Musik, die mehr nach einem Gespräch denn nach einer Performance klingt. So beschrieb einst James Hale Coda den Stil der Nu Band, die am 8. Feber Januar in Villach gastiert. Wer das Quartett 2011 im Jahr 2017 im Kulturhof erlebt hat, weiß: Das stimmt. Die hochkarätigen Musiker „besprechen“ auf der Bühne alte Jazz-Traditionen, BeBop, Soul und Gospel. Und wie es sich für eine gute Konversation gehört, sind nur die Themen vorgegeben.

Der Gesprächsverlauf ist feinster Impro-Jazz, bei dem man merkt: Die vier wissen, wovon sie da reden. Da stimuliert der swingende Drive der Percussion die Trompete zu lautstarken, pointierten Äußerungen. Dort antwortet ein Bass-Solo rhythmisch perfekt kontrolliert auf offene Fragen der selbstbewusst gespielten Gitarre. Die Stimmung wird mal schwer, mal ausgelassen, wie es an einem Abend mit guten Freunden nun mal so ist.

Die Band gründete sich 1999, brachte seitdem zehn Alben heraus und tourte mehrmals mit großem Erfolg durch die Jazzclubs der Welt. 2014 starb Roy Campbell, seine Nachfolge trat der Deutsche Thomas Heberer an. 2021 musste das Ensemble einen weiteren Verlust verkraften: Der Ausnahme-Saxophonist Mark Whitecage verstarb unerwartet kurz vor der Jubiläumstour der Band.

The Nu Band heute, das sind Joe Fonda am Bass, Lou Grassi am Schlagzeug (beide Gründungsmitglieder), Thomas Heberer an der Trompete und Kenny Wessel an der Gitarre. Alle Mitglieder des Ensembles steuern eigene Kompositionen bei und geben damit dem gesamten Jazz-Gespräch einen frischen, individuellen Touch. Die Musiker sind Bandleader verschiedenster Formationen und haben in ihren Lebensläufen lange Listen an Weltklassejazzern, mit denen sie zusammengearbeitet haben. Am 28. Januar im Bechersaal.

Before moving, he was a lecturer at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts, and the recipient of both the prestigious “SWR Jazzpreis” and the “Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik.” Thomas has been a member of the Dutch Instant Composers Pool (aka ICP) since 1993.
